Channel Estimation

There are various factors that affect wireless signals. A phone may try to connect to a tower station, but multiple factors such as being in basement, being in moving train etc., the connection might be lost. This is due to the change in the channel of wireless communication system. Now the question is, can we estimate the channel and is it possible to undo all effects?

A signal is carried out in electro magnetic wave, when a use sends message. There can buildings, different devices trying to connect, towers, vehicles.

Three phenomenos occur due to above scenarios: Reflection, Diffraction and Scattering which leads to multipath fading. Along with it, there is Doppler’s effect which brings shift in carrier freqency due to mobility of various entities.

Thus, it is important to model wireless communication systems.

So, what is channel estimation?

A wirelles system signal flow consists a sender with information x trying to send through wireless link that goes through fading, referred to as channel where noise also consists. Receiver receives signal y.

h is fading coefficient where h and n are random in nature. We can use pilot symbols.

Channels fading, equalizers etc.

Use of known reference signal etc.
